Pods skipper Gomez felt like celebrating.
It was kind of a calm day around the league, with only three homers hit all day in six contests. The main news was the cellar-dwelling Padres upset of the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Joe Niekro outdueled Jim Bunning for the 2-1 squeaker. Coupled with the Giants' 6-3 win over the Reds at Candlestick, the San Francisco club moves back to within 2 and a half of the top spot.

Shambling ape Wade Blasingame brought his left-handed slants to Atlanta.
At Atlanta, former Brave Wade Blasingame was handed the ball for his first start of the season, and he didn't pitch badly, but Phil Niekro was better and picked up his first win in exactly a month, vaulting the Braves back into third place ahead of Cincinnati. The Braves are now 13-1 against the hapless Spacemen.
"These road uniforms suck!"
