The 10th time is the charm!
The Expos' Steve Renko finally got his first major league win on Thursday, and it only took him ten tries! Steve showed a little of why the 'Spos parted with (at the time) NL home run leader Donn Clendenon to get him, as he fanned 13 Reds in a complete game shutout. Clendenon, for his part, has been a bust in New York, hitting just 2 homers for the Mets since being acquired a month and a half ago. As for the Reds, they suffered through an astonishing 10-17 July in which they hit just 11 homers as a team. Unbelievable.

For July, the best team was, of course, the Astros, at 21-5. The worst was the Padres, who turned in a putrid 6-20 performance. And now, stats!

The Cardinals are interesting - stat-wise - in that they have the largest lead in the league, but are not really lighting up the stats board. Must be the pitching.

Ah, a Coco Laboy mention - thank you!!!!

How long has gamblin' Pete been stuck on 19 bombs? As the Reds fade, I look forward to their fortunes in the upcoming seasons!

William--yes, it is their starting pitching and their excellent defense. Also, they do usually scratch out a couple of runs, at least; they don't often get shut out, and their pitchers only need 2 or 3 runs to win. After Gibson and Carlton, both "A", they have briles and Chuck Taylor, both "B". Even Washburn, at "C" is better than the average swing man. And they do have Little Joel Hoerner sitting in the bullpen corner, but he hasn't got any help at all. If you can get to the starter, they're screwed unless it's late.

Steve--don't give up on the Reds just yet! Every team goes through it at times, and they are too potent to keep slumbering like this. They are only 6 back with 58 to play. This Reds line-up was a bog reason why I chose this season, and I am agog at how they floundered in July. They don't have the pitching to win low scoring games--they need to mash!
